Second Small Rosa Room

Grand & Imperial Tour

Consisting of one large room and two adjoining smaller rooms, the Rosa Rooms form an ensemble with uniform décor.

The rooms are named after the painter of the large-scale landscape paintings that adorn their walls.

Joseph Rosa

Joseph Rosa (1726–1805) came from a family of artists whose original name was Roos. Initially painter to the courts at Berlin and Dresden, in 1769 he was appointed director of the Imperial Paintings Gallery in Vienna, the holdings of which today form the core of the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Rosa also wrote the first catalogue of the Imperial Gallery to be compiled in keeping with modern art-historical criteria.
